Open Letter From Your Future College Pitching Coach.
What is expected of you and what you can start doing now to be an impact player as a freshman.
At the beginning of the season when you jump right into practices, you are very prone to pre-season injuries. Best precaution is to make sure you are warming up completely and wearing enough clothes in the cold weather. Cold muscles are not flexible and they tend to "pull" much easier causing inflammation.
Being a pitcher, you should be in love with defense. Breath it, live it, and do whatever you have to do to be the best at it. You are the only player that has her own record separate from the rest of the team. Take pride in you record and take a loss personally. Wins will always be a whole team effort. Outside of catching and throwing, here are 4 tips for pitchers to improve whole team defense.
In my 13 years of coaching pitchers, I always have a few pitchers that just don't seem to be improving. After a short discussion with the child and parent, the parent proudly admits they have been making the daughter pitch 100 pitchers per day. (Sometimes it's an hour.) My first question is, how did you come up with 100 pitches per day?
I NEVER suggest 100 pitches per day. Here is exactly why.
Being strong is one thing, but knowing how to use your strength to produce power is another. And what turns strength into power for sports performance is body control.
Tossing, throwing and slamming a weighted medicine ball are easy and fun ways to work on concentrating your movements to increase your power.
