"If I make her mad, she plays better!"
Ever said that before? I know as a parent, it is easy to frustrate young athletes but does being mad actually enhance performance?
Short answer, yes!
Long answer, being mad is just a distraction. When an athlete gets mad, she is not focusing on what problems she may have and just letting muscle memory take over. Although being mad is not ideal, it does help the athlete mentally.
If you have this type of athlete, work with her on shifting her focus from anger to a more positive distraction. Here are some examples:
It's important to teach athletes to focus on controlling the controllables. Being in control of your emotions is apart of being an elite athlete.
