You don't play softball
Ok... you might play softball but you don't PLAY SOFTBALL. What does this mean? I'll explain.
I want to share a story of when my high school volleyball team went to watch UNCA volleyball team play. We had a good volleyball program at my school, winning seasons and girls went on to play in college. So we though WE PLAYED VOLLEYBALL.
My mom played college volleyball and came with us on this trip. I was sitting next to her when the teams began their warm ups.
I saw something I have never seen before. Different types of sets and spikes and plays on the net.... I was amazed! I watched and tried to learn what and how these athletes were doing this... A few moments later, I turned to my mom and said, "We don't play volleyball, do we?"
My mom very politely said, "No. You do not."
So why am I telling you, you don't play softball? There are many girls that play a sport with the same rules, but do not play SOFTBALL.
Now, I am not trying to insult anyone but I do want to motivate, encourage, and give a little tough love to get more girls learning the sport. Our coaches are wonderful but the best coaches in the world are the first to admit they do not know everything. Players need to take it upon themselves to study and learn the game of softball.
If you have an opportunity to watch college softball, pay attention! Don't use this as a social hour, put down your phones, and figure out what you need to do to get to that level. There are many games on tv now so seeing these athletes in action is easier than ever.
